Games and Gaming Improvements on Windows 10
I've pulled together a number of online and PC-based computer game titles and tips here in response to recent inquiries on this topic.
Windows 10 is now offering a fast-growing range of games and gaming options, ranging from simple solitaire to a wide assortment of Xbox games and even game discs. A large number of these games are free through the Microsoft Store.
Windows 10 also has been optimized for games and gaming aficionados with its most recent major update, the Creators Update, now installed on most Windows 10 computers since April-June this year. This updates facilitates putting a game you like inside a comparable sort of performance firewall - you can enable Game Mode to use your PC strictly for gaming during gameplay-time.
Where to start?
Here are a couple simple and popular games first, and then a longer list to follow.
CLASSIC SOLITAIRE
I'll start with simple solitaire. Classic Solitaire (Free) for Windows 10 is the traditional solitaire game with two modes of drawing cards (by one or by three) and two modes of scoring (standard and Vegas). You can get this separate from the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. At least a dozen residents in our area have asked about this most simple and popular Klondike card game, which used to be a staple on many personal computers.
You can get the Classic Solitaire for free. Try this link ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9WZDNCRFJ2SM or click on the Microsoft Store icon (on your Start Menu tiles or your Task Bar) and search "Classic Solitaire". Click "GET" on the game description page to install it on your computer.
It lets you time your games and accumulate points. Classic Solitaire (Free) for Windows 10 offers a left handed mode by reversing the deal layout. It also provides 16 card designs; eight of them are in a retro style, resembling the cards that appear in older versions of Windows.
Other popular card games available on the promotional page for Classic Solitaire include:
Freecell
Hearts Deluxe
Rummi
Sudoku+ and Sudoku Challenge
ELVENAR
This is a town-building game that I discovered through Facebook. It's similar in some ways to Minecraft or some of the Sim games of yore. If you like the challenge of building up a "world" over time, as opposed to "game over", starting up an Elvenar town will engage you for quite awhile. It will tap your "strategic" vision in going about generating and putting resources to work. Expanding your city can be done by a mix of negotiation and conquest. You can play it independently or interact with other players for trade benefits or collaboration.
Sign-up and Log-in for playing in the Elvenar worlds is at https://us0.elvenar.com/ .
POGO GAMES
I haven't spent much time myself with these, but POGO probably is the most popular online game site I see installed among computer users who I visit here in our area.
Pogo.com is a free online gaming website with over 100 casual games including many card games, word games and board games.
Like most "free" game sites, POGO relies on ad sponsors, but signing up for their subsription services provides you with ad-free game-play.
Also, fairly typical of online game sites, games on POGO are played in a browser with the Java-plugin or Flash. When issues come up concerning game display, they usually have to do with browser issues, either settings adjustment or clean-up.
Their web address is http://www.pogo.com/ .
VIDEO STYLE GAMES - MICROSOFT STORE
If you have a Microsoft ID, then you have access to the Microsoft Store for Apps and Games. Most of these are free or very low-priced. Since the Creators Update, game-play on your Windows 10 machine should be very smooth. The Windows operating system is getting closer and closer to matching game console performance quality.
(You can use your regular Email address as your Microsoft ID, or you can set up a special Email address just for that purpose. It's simple to set up. I just advise to not lose your password. That's always inconvenient.)
Here are a "few score" of popular game titles you can load from the Microsoft Store. If you've got a relatively new machine with a decent processor speed and memory, these kinds of games should play pretty easily. If you have a tower, most times you can add memory or even a special graphics card to amp up gaming display quality and performance.
