Steps to Guard Your Privacy on Facebook

In recent years a lot of internet users in the area have expressed concern about privacy and personal data getting into the wrong hands through Facebook.

Many of us have Facebook accounts because of having friends or family members who are easier to contact on Facebook than any other way.

Facebook also has come to be nearly the easiest and most popular way of sharing photos and personal updates for friends and family at a distance.

Social networking sites like Facebook can be fun, convenient and useful ways of keeping up contacts, finding information, and enjoying games, videos and entertainment resources.

Since it is "free", Facebook makes its money from advertising, and there is the reason we expect at least some of our public information may get shared with commercial entities.

In other words, for most people it's worth using a Facebook account, but it's worth checking your settings so as not to be "too" public online.

Despite recent news stories about security breaches and violations, most Facebook users can protect their privacy and security effectively by adjusting certain personal "settings" on the Facebook website. Facebook gives us a lot of control over what part of our information is "public".

If you're using Facebook or thinking about it, you should be aware that you can control who has accessing to finding or contacting you, and also you can control who sees any postings, photos or material that you share with friends or family.

Most of these controls are accessible, when you log in, through the downward pointing triangle located toward the far right hand end of the navy blue 'bar' at the top of your Facebook page.

If you click that triangle, then click Settings in the drop-down menu.

Once you're in the settings area you can find most of the controls you need by clicking on the Privacy or Security listings along the vertical left-hand navigation pane.

You also can bolster your privacy and security online by going to your Facebook timeline and clicking on the "About" section, where you can make selections about what personal information is associated identifiably with your profile.

Typically, running through settings changes to strengthen privacy and security might run about 30-40 minutes at most.
