First Steps to Try If Your Word Program Won't Start
Occasionally Microsoft Office users may encounter problems starting up Word or other programs that make up the MS Office suite.
This can happen when certain system files get changed, for example due to a range of anomalies that damage certain system files and settings. It can happen due to faulty installation of an update too, but more likely it may result from a failure to update. Microsoft updates its Office apps automatically, but a variety of factors can prevent those updates from happening.
Usually the Office program that people notice "not starting" is Word, because that is the most widely and frequently used Office program.
In case of start failure, the first thing to try is updating your Office apps. You can initiate this process from any of the Office apps, so if Word doesnt start up but Excel does then you can initiate Office apps updating from Excel.
Open the Office app, click File, then Account. Under Product Information click Update Options right beside Office Updates, and choose Update Now.
Office will then check for updates and apply any which are needed. It should display a confirmation message when complete.
If this doesn't solve the problem, there is a Windows Repair tool that might help.
Right-click the Windows or "Start" icon, usually in the lower left on our taskbar. Click Apps and Features, then on the Settings window that pops up select your Office app and click Modify.
Depending on your Office version, select Online Repair then Repair; or select Repair then Continue.
After the process finishes, restart your machine and try to open whichever of the Office programs that would not start.
In many cases either the update or repair instructions above will resolve the problem of Office apps not starting. If they don't work, doing a full reinstall may be in order. But as a rule one of these two options will resolve the problem.
