Windows Updates Speeding Up Computers Soon

This page is saved for archival reference, as Windows 11 has now been released and Windows 12 is anticipated.

Windows 10's next update will many PC's run faster.

Next update also will allow you to uninstall more apps that clutter your screen.

Most users do best by letting Windows updates install automatically, not checking for updates manually.

First - Windows update to make PC's run faster:

Since last January, most computers running Windows have been slowed down because a special Microsoft patch got installed to prevent security threats related to a serous flaw in processor chip design, not a Microsoft problem, rather a hardware problem on many computers. Their upcoming update will use a method developed by Google and applied on some Linux systems to block attacks that would exploit the chip design flaw.

It has not been unusual this year for Windows users to see slowdowns up to 23% due to the temporary patch that Microsoft issued early this year. However, using the Google solution - called "Retpoline" - that slowdown should be largely eliminated and computer users should experience less wait time when using their computer with Windows 10. The slowdown will not be corrected on Windows 7, however.

Expected improvement may not come to most users for some months yet, but by and by the update should install automatically on most Windows 10 machines.

Second - Uninstalling Built-in Windows 10 Apps that You Don't Want

There already are certain built-in Windows 10 apps that you can keep if you use them, but you can remove if you don't. They are: Microsoft Solitaire Collection
  • My Office
  • OneNote
  • Print 3D
  • Skype
  • Tips
  • Weather
Starting with the update scheduled for next April, you also will be able to keep or remove the following apps: Windows 10's next update, codenamed 19H1 and due for release sometime around April 2019, will let you uninstall more of Windows 10's built-in apps with a few clicks. Don't want 3D Viewer, Groove Music, or Paint 3D? Uninstall them!
  • 3D Viewer
  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Groove Music
  • Mail
  • Movies & TV
  • Paint 3D
  • Snip & Sketch
  • Sticky Notes
  • Voice Recorder
If you uninstall an app then want to reinstall it, you can do so through the Microsoft Store icon.

After you've uninstalled a built-in app, you can always reinstall it from the Store if you want it back.

Third - Why it's best to avoid checking for major updates manually:

These comments apply particularly to the major Windows upates that are scheduled for every six months, typically in April and in October.

If you remember the recent scare about people losing files from the October update, one piece of advice that got publicized was to NOT click the "Check for Updates" button. The main reason is that doing so may download and install updates that Microsoft has not fully tested. Getting updates manually basically can turn you into a tester for new code before it's ready for the general public.

If you wait for Microsoft to notify you on your screen that updates are ready to install, then the updates have gone through the normal testing process and you don't get "half-baked" code.

However, if your machine is way out of date in updates installation, then selective checking for updates can bring a computer up to the current version. Your Windows version can be determined using the "winver" command in the Cortana box.
